In Jyotish, Aries is the first rashi of the zodiacal circle. It can be understood as the principle of beginning: the moment energy steps forward, starts moving, tries, takes risks, protects and declares "I am here." The sign describes style; its lord indicates how well that style withstands reality.

The third step is to check repetition. If the chart contains much fire, a strong Mars and emphasis on the first, third, sixth or tenth house, the Aries theme becomes louder. The third mistake is forgetting time. Aries in a house may remain hidden for a long time if periods, transits or circumstances do not activate it. The chart does not say, "This is always equally visible." It indicates a theme's potential, which unfolds under particular conditions. Take any chart and find the house occupied by Aries. Formulate a working hypothesis rather than a character description: "This area requires a beginning, direct action and the ability to protect a boundary." Then find Mars and refine the hypothesis: where is the source of action, who supports or obstructs it, and does it have strength?

Next, check whether you are substituting the sign for the house. Aries in the ninth is not "the first house in the ninth." It is the ninth house colored by Aries: worldview, teachers, a distant perspective and dharma through an independent path, a bold question and willingness to go where no ready-made road exists.
